Reema went to terrace early morning. Her mother has developed a small kitchen garden in one corner. She saw that leaves of some potted plants show water droplets gathered on the border as shown in the picture.

She got to know from her teacher that some plants exude water from leaf borders which can be seen in the form of droplets. it’s a guttation process and it occurs mainly during night time. But Reema wondered that why water is expelled out through margins when transpiration process is already active. Can you guess the reason/s which can cumulatively explain the phenomenon?

i) It occurs when leaf epidermal cells are functioning as water storage tissue and they release excess stored water during night.

ii) It is because the water cannot readily escape in vaporized form due to closed stomata.

iii) The atmospheric humidity is too high for effective transpiration.

iv) When water taken by roots has excessive salts, they are secreted out in dissolved form.

v) Some plants have leaves with serrated margins. Veins ending in grooves formed by the serration, are prone to water leakage.

vi) Higher root pressure pushes water upwards though transpiration is not fully functional.

iii only

iv only

i, iv and v only

ii, iii and vi only
