let the number of pages in a book be x

so , 2/3 of x + 40 = 7/10 of x

2x/3 + 40 = 7x / 10

7x /10 - 2x/3 = 40

21x 20x / 30 = 40

x / 30 =40

x = 1200

so , 1200 × 7/10 = 840 pages are read

and 1200 - 840 = 360 pages left to be read
