1) Born in 1918 in Mveso Trasnkei, South Africa, Nelson Mandela, was the son of a Tribal Counsellor, who was destined to become a Tribal Chief, but lost his fortune due to a dispute with a Colonial Magistrate.
2) Mandela was born as Rolihlahla Mandela, and received the name Nelson when he started attending school, by his school teacher.
3) After the death of his father, when he was 9 years old he was adopted by the Chief of the Thembu People.
He left his village in Qunu to go to Mqhekezweni, the royal capital of Thembuland, and that is where he spend most of his adolescence.
4) At the age of 16 he became well acquainted with the customs, traditions and history of Africa and was deeply moved by the plight of his people.
5) He attended, Wesleyan Mission School, the Clarkbury Boarding Institute and then Wesleyan College.
6) He enrolled in College of Fort Hare in 1939, which was comparable Oxford in UK and Harvard in the USA.
7) In his second year at Fort Hare Mandela was a part of a boycott, as he was the representative of the Student Council, and was subsequently expelled.
Reaching back home, he realised that he would have to live a life that was bound by the tribal customs, hence he ran away to Johannesburg and did a string of odd jobs.
8) He enrolled in the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg to study law eventually.
9) Mandela became actively involved in the African National Congress in 1942, and started the African National Youth League.
10) Their methods of agitation, boycott etc. were later adopted by the ANC, and for his acts of defiance he was finally imprisoned in 1956.
