Explanation:

There is no such thing as a ray of light, it’s not a physical entity. A light “ray” is mental construct to picture what direction the light is travelling. To “see” something, a quantum of light energy (photon) must enter the eye and deposit its energy to a photo-receptive cell, which triggers a nerve signal to the brain. If the light is passing by you, it is not entering the eye, so you don’t see it.

If you think about it, if a “ray” of light could be seen, it would have to be shedding energy as it travelled, and it would quickly become depleted. In effect, this is what happens when a beam of light scatters off dust or mist.

Just think, when you see a star, the photons have travelled thousands of light years from the source to your eye, just as energetic as when they left!
