Refractive index(n) is the relative comparison of speed(c) change in light before and after it entered into a medium and is expressed as:

n=c/v;

n= refractive index of diamond,

c= light speed in air or vacuum, v= light speed in the given medium(diamond in this case).

If we rearrange above equation we get:

v=c/n; substituting

c=3X10^8 m/s & n = 2.417 we get:

v=1.24X10^8 m/s about 2.417 less than c.
