Given info : Refractive index of water, keroscene , crownglass and canada balsam is 1.33, 1.44, 1.52 and 1.53 respectively.

To find : in which of the four media, the speed of light is maximum and minimum

solution : speed of light is inversely proportional to refractive index

[ actually wavelength changes from medium to medium but light depends on wavelength so light also changes. ]

so if the value of refractive index is higher, speed of light will be lower and if the value of Refractive index is lower, speed of light will be higher.

least refractive index = 1.33 [ water ] so speed of light is maximum in the water.

highest refractive index = 1.53 [ Canada Balaam] so the speed of light is minimum in the Canada Balaam.
