He writes: “By substance I understand what is in itself and is conceived through itself… “ (E1d3). Spinoza follows Descartes (and the tradition) in defining substance as “in itself” or as an ultimate subject.

Given this definition, Descartes infers that each substance has only one attribute. ... The problem is then to explain how we can have one substance with more than one essence. Thus, the first problem with Spinoza's theory of attributes is to explain the relation between the attributes and the essence of substance.
