with a hundred feet
was on its journey
to where
only it knew
My civilized foot
dressed in polished leather

there was only a soft sound

of a creature of God
my maker.
I looked to see
if my sole was soiled
and walked away.

The poem Centipede written by Chandak Chatterjee talks about a centipede that was crushed by the narrator's shoes and instead of felling forry for the creature's death, the narrator was more interested in knowing if his shoes's sole was soiled due to the stampin of the centipede

Explanation:

  • The poet here refers to the Centipede with hundred feet
  • The poet call his foot civilised because he says the foot dressed in polish leather very gently had some down upon the centipede and while the shoe had trampled  the centipede it did not make much noise, there was only a soft sound signifying the centipede's end. The poet perhaps is conveying that in a polite and well-mannered way the shoes stamped the centipede that the shoe did not make much noise while stamping the centipede. Also it could be that the poet was conveying though the shoes had stamped the centipede it did not cause much agony/pain to the centipede. Here the poet is giving the message as to how some people in the society value non-living things (such as the shoe here) and are insensitive to life of small creatures (such as the centipede)
