What is defference between tribe and caste?

Answer

A tribe is an endogenous unit, and a political unit in the sense that the tribal society has a political organization of its own. [1]

A caste is a heterogeneous social structure with endogamous sections within it which may or may not follow the same occupation. Caste structures were formed from interaction with specific tribes.

There are many who contest this, and claim high castes were always high castes, and there was no interaction with tribes. Perhaps it is demeaning to them to be associated with Scheduled Tribes.

Let me give the example of my own genome to explain this. There are many studies involving y-DNA or male ancestors; with several blogs and forums detailing family histories of those who share the results. For a change, am going to use mtDNA for female lineage. Since the religion we follow is a sampradaya on feminine divinity (shri) besides bhagavatism, I became curious to understand links between tribes and their customs which are especially associated with the female lineage. Here goes:

The founder-ancestor of my subclade lived very recently, approx. between 2100 BC to 785 BC. This subclade is part of a larger clade which forms the largest (30%) part of the Oriya Saora tribe (aka, Savara, Sora) and 20% of the Oriya Brahmins (Read: Pandas). But was there gene-flow between the Saoras and the Pandas? Based on my results, I would say there was. But since there is no dedicated study on this, it is not possible to claim so, as yet.

In addition, I share anywhere between 15% to 40% matches with the one priestly community of Tamilnadu. Again, was there gene-flow between the Saoras, Pandas and this priestly community? I'd say there was, but again, proof does not exist.

The only other caste associations in Orissa are with Khandayats and Gops (Sadgops). While these associations are not a surprise, the interesting part comes from association with following tribes, with whom I share the clade:-

Juangs (Austroasiatic-Munda speakers in Orissa),

Dungri-Bhils (Indo-Aryan speakers in Rajasthan),

Lachungpa (Sino-Tibetan speakers, part of the Bhutia tribe of Tibet),

With the below, the association is minor, ranging from 5% to 1%:

Katkari-Kathodi (Indo-Aryan speakers in Maharashtra-Gujarat-Rajasthan),

Thakars (Indo-Aryan speakers in Maharashtra-Gujarat-Rajasthan),

Andhs (Indo-Aryan speakers in Maharashtra-Andhra)

Nihali speakers (language isolate, from Maharashtra and central India)

Korkus (Austroasiatic-North Munda speakers in central India (Madhya Pradesh))

Jenu-Kurubas (Dravidian speakers in Karnataka)

This means, before the founder-ancestor of my subclade separated out to create a lineage between 2100 BC to 785 BC, she came from a larger grouping whose members were spread across the above tribes around 22,000 years ago (in the paleolithic clan structure period). Or, few members of the Saoras, Juangs and Bhils became members of the above tribes, possibly before 2100 BC, which explains the minor association.

This is interesting, owing to 2 reasons. One, there is no association with other tribes, even major ones, despite living in common geographical regions. Two, interaction between specific tribes led to the formation of their religious beliefs and contributed to socio-cultural structure of castes. How a religious belief was formed in this scenario is the most interesting part.

All current tribes are composite, having acquired members from different older tribes. All current caste structures are heterogeneous, created from current and older tribal structures. The movement of people can be mindboggling. The Savara Kapus became Kapus in Andhra. The Savara Kapus were supposedly the priestly faction of the Savaras (Saoras). Therefore the Savara association was not at all a surprise.*
