Given Relative permeability of iron is 5500 then its magnetic susceptibility will be

A para magnetic material has a constant relative permeability slightly more than one. The magnetic constant is also known as the permeability constant μ₀

So X max = (μ r - 1 )

                = (5500 - 1)

  X max = 5499

magnetic susceptibility is the ratio of magnetisation, \mathbf{M} to magnetic field intensity,\mathbf{H} it is measure of how much a material will become magnetised in an applied magnetic field.

e.g., \chi=\frac{\mathbf{M}}{\mathbf{H}}

here given,

relative permeability of iron, \mu_r = 5500

use the relation,

\mu=\mu_0(1+\chi)

or, \frac{\mu}{\mu_0}=\mu_r=1+\chi

or, \chi=\mu_r-1

hence, magnetic susceptibility, \chi = 5500 - 1 = 5499
