In Sahyadri Hills – A Lesson in Humility is a beautiful narration by Sudha Murthy. She talks about her experiences with the tribals in the hilly area that she had visited to distribute umbrellas and clothes for the rural school children. The children expressed their desire to learn computers. They requested her to get them books on this in Kannada. Sudha Murthy assured them that she would definitely do so when she was back in Bangalore. She also said that she would write such a book herself if she could not find any. The children were happy beyond words.

Thandappa, the eldest person of the tribe, gave her a bottle of juice made with a red fruit. Sudha Murthy was a bit hesitant to accept it as she had visited the village for giving and not taking. Moreover, the locals themselves had very little to eat and drink. She refused politely keeping this in mind. Surprisingly, Thandappa also declined her gifts. He explained that their ancestors had taught them to accept gifts only when he could offer something in return and it was accepted.

Sudha Murthy was undoubtedly impressed and humbled by the high principles followed by an old tribal man with no schooling.
