Both. It unites people that share a common religion while tending to divide people who have differing views.

The division is not a problem in and of itself. People are united and divided by many things, race, color, language, the school they attend or attended, politics, gender, sports, sports teams, the make of the car they drive, style, country, state, region they live in or grew up in, clans, tribes, families, the list goes on and on.

The problems come in when the divisions that unite groups also include intolerance for people in other “divisions”.

Religions can be intolerant of one another, however, as atheists prove repeatedly, one need not be religious to be intolerant of people with other views on religion.
