INTRODUCTION
- No development of proper missionary movement by Buddhism but it spread widely over the centuries, 1st to SE Asia then through Central Asia to China and the rest of E. Asia, finally to Tibet
- Often developed 'organically' due to local interest, but sometimes rulers adopted it to help bring ethics to their people, no one forced to convert
- 'Peaceful' spread of Buddhism, it was modified wherever it went to fit local mentality without compromising essential points of wisdom and compassion
- Each country had its own forms, structures, and spiritual head (eg. Dalai Lama of Tibet currently)

- Religion is a social-cultural system of designated behaviors and practices, morals, worldviews, texts, sanctified places, prophecies, ethics, or organizations, that relates humanity to supernatural, transcendental, and spiritual elements.
- However, there is no scholarly consensus over what precisely constitutes a religion.
