Consider a ball of some mass dropped from a height...We all know that there is some work done inorder to move the ball downward and it it done by earth itself...So this workdone by gravity on the ball gives a 'thing' to the ball...since we know that the ball has a velocity before hitting the ground..so this velocity is gained by the ball through some interaction and that is the kinetic energy of the ball...So basically energy is something that becomes the cause of doing some work.
