Amongst the world’s most heavily persecuted minority communities are the Rohingyas, whose mass exodus from Myanmar in 2017 led to more than 712,179[1] of them seeking asylum in neighbouring Bangladesh. The figure added to the estimated 200,000–300,000[2] Rohingyas, or what the Bangladesh government calls ‘Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals’, who were already living in Bangladesh by then.[3] This special report examines the living conditions in the refugee camps for Rohingyas in the border areas of Cox’s Bazar at Chittagong, particularly in terms of access to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and the usage of WASH facilities by women and children in the camps. The report explores the measures taken by the Government of Bangladesh to improve these living conditions, and discusses the role India can play in extending assistance to Bangladesh.
