SEVENTEEN PEOPLE died and 43 sustained injuries when a luxury bus rammed into two vehicles and rolled down 20 feet off the Mumbai-Pune Expressway on Sunday. The incident occurred near Shivkar village, around 11 km from Panvel, at 4.30 am when Nikhil Travels bus hit an Innova and a Swift car. The 17 dead include three children, the youngest aged around two.
Innova driver Ashish Patil, who was returning to Mumbai from Lonavla along with his friends, is the complainant in the case. In his statement to the police, he said, “Near Shivkar village on the expressway, we saw a Swift car (MH 02 CL 1480) waiting on the side of the road. The driver of the car told us that their car’s tyres had burst and requested help. When the tyres were being changed, a speeding bus rammed into the Swift car from behind and plunged off the road taking my car along.” Bus driver Iqbal Babalal Sheikh (66), a resident of Satara, was among those who died.
