The government of Himachal Pradesh has launched a project for the conservation of Yak, an endangered animal, whose population has drastically declined in the past few years.

Weighing about 1,000 kilograms, Yak is often found either in black or while colour. It can survive in freezing temperatures as low as minus 40 degree centigrade.

Known as `camel of the snow', the yak is gradually becoming extinct. In many tribal areas in the State, Yak is used for ploughing in the fields. And, there are many who enjoy relishing Yak's meat during winter. The hairy skin is also used to prepare blankets, shawls and carpets.

With the population of this endangered animal slowly decreasing, the government of Himachal Pradesh has decided to launch a conservation project for their breeding in the tribal district of Lahaul and Spiti.

The Yak owners have welcomed this project and hope that it will help to preserve the endangered snow animal.

``We are happy about the proposed project of Himachal Pradesh government. We believe it would bear some good results in protecting the number of Yaks from declining further,'' said Seva Ram, a yak owner.

Yak ride is very popular among the tourists who frequent Kufri, Manali and Shimla in Himachal Pradesh.
