Represent √2 on a number line. Draw a number line and mark a point O, representing zero, on it. Suppose point A represents 1 . Then, OA = 1 . Now, draw a right triangle OAB such that AB = OA = 1.

By Pythagoras theorem, we have  {ob}^{2}  =  {oa}^{2}  +  {ab}^{2}  \\  {ob}^{2}  =  {1}^{2}  +  {1}^{2}  \\  {ob}^{2}  = 1 + 1  \\  {ob}^{2}  = 2 \\ ob =  \sqrt{2}

Hope it helps you.
