In today’s world, computers form the basis for several things. All technological features are accompanied by computing and calculating facilities. We have modern super computers capable of calculations close to millions of flops per second.
Yet, these new age computers all began with the first computational device: the abacus. It consisted of a wooden frame with beads attached to it and served as the world’s first calculator.
It was followed by Napier’s bones, invented by Scottish mathematician John Napier, which were used for logarithmic calculations, multiplication and division.
The Punched Card Reader, invented by Herman Hollerith of the US Census Bureau, was the first data storage and retrieval system.
A major breakthrough in digital computing was the invention of the transistor in 1947. It enabled IBM to develop FORTRAN in 1957 along with several other programming languages.
The Integrated Circuit made its entry in 1959 and formed the backbone for computers and PCs. After its invention, super computers, mini and micro computers were manufactured on a large scale.
"First computer generation started with vacuum tubes. The first generation computers were these: The ENIAC (1946), EDSAC (1949), EDVAC (1950)
UNIVAC I (1951).
The second generation was within transistors. The third generation was incorporated with integrated circuits. The fourth with the microprocessor chips. The first generation of the computers was capable of artificial intelligence altogether. "
