Reproduction is not essential for the survival of an individual but it is important for the survival of species:

It is important to note that reproduction is necessary for the survival of a species but not an individual. This is because reproduction is the mutiplication of living organisms of the sam species, this is what give birth to the next generation.
While reprodcution is  a fundamental trait of living organisms its not a basic need. An individual can live without reproducing but a species will be extinct if they don't reproduce.

Therefore, for there to be a next generation of species there must be reproduction between the species.
