A Republic means a form of a government in which the head of the State is not hereditary but is directly or indirectly elected by the people. ln India, the head of the State (President) is indirectly elected by the directly elected members of the Parliament and the State Legislative Assemblies, while in the USA, he is directly elected. Both these countries are, therefore, Republics.
