The failure of the Cripps’ Mission compelled the Congress to adopt the Quit India Resolution at Wardha in July 1942. The All India Congress Committee ratified it on August 8,1942 in Mumbai.

The British suppressed the Movement with ruthless brutality. Gandhi and many other prominent leaders were arrested. The Congress was declared illegal.
