when calamities cause destruction to life and property in a large scale it is called disaster.

Coal becomes a resource only when humans are able the use it , similarly all resources on earth only become resources if humans can use them for some reason or in some way. The same goes for calamities and disasters, a tsunami or earthquake will only become a disaster if human life is affected by them.
