Banyan trees are the most resourceful plants. They are figs that grow as epiphytes which means initially they grow on other plants.

They respire with the help of
aerial prop roots that render the plans into thick, woody trunks until maturity. These roots also spread laterally to occupy a  wider area.
 
These roots are present above the ground. They are adventitious in nature and found in diverse plant species, including orchids, tropical coastal swamp trees such as mangroves, etc.
