They extend in size from the demoiselle crane, which ranges from 90 cm (35 in) long, to the sarus crane, which can be up to 176 cm (69 in), despite the fact that the heaviest is the ‘red-delegated crane’, which weighs around 12 kg (26 lb).

They are ‘long legged and necked’ flying creatures with streamlined bodies and huge, adjusted wings. They respire through the lungs which are filled with many air sacs.
