Purchases are always debited and hence any purchase returns are credited. Say you bought goods from Mr.A on credit and the goods are defective. You had already entered the entry as

"Purchases a/c Dr

To Mr. A a/c"

While passing the Purchase Return entry, Just reverse it as

"Mr. A a/c Dr

To Purchase Returns"
