✔ Revolt against The British

✿ People in different parts of India had been protesting against the exploitative policies of British. The revolt of 1857, according to historians, is an important landmark in Indian history. The revolt was started by Indian soldiers in the British army. The reason for the revolt was the introduction of the Enfield rifle. A rumour spread that The cartridges of rifle contains the fat of pigs and cows. Before loading it into the gun, the soldiers have to put it in their mouth which was against the religious sentiments of both Hindus and Muslims.

✿ The revolt 1857 began at Meerut, soon spread to northern and central India. It was joined by farmers, craftsperson and the other section of Indian society. Indian soldiers overthrew their superiors and marched to Delhi to crown Bahadur Shah Zadar, The last Mughal Emperor, as the Kong. Indian rulers such as Rani Lakshmi Bai of Jhansi, Nana Saheb, Tantya Tope and Kunwar Singh joined the rebels. Rani Lakshmi Bai was martyred and Nana saheb continued the battle.

✿ The Revolt continued for two years before it was crushed by the British. The mutiny failed because of lack of proper Leadership and planning. The British had better trained soldiers and Superior weapons. Also some Indian rulers helped British. Bahadur Shah Zafar was arrested and exiled to Burma, where he breathed his last. His two sons were killed, bringing the once mighty Mughal empire to an end.
