Given:

  • size of carpet = 4 m × 6 2/3 m
  • size of room = 3 1/3 m × 5 1/3 m

To find: the fraction of carpet should be cut-off to fit into the room = ?

Solution:

Area of the carpet = 4 m × 6 2/3 m

= 4 × 20/3 sq. m

= 80/3 sq. m

Area of the room = 3 1/3 m × 5 1/3 m

= 10/3 × 16/3 sq. m

= 160/9 sq. m

Now, area of room / area of carpet

= (160/9) / (80/3)

= 160/9 × 3/80

= 2/3

Answer: Therefore 2/3 fraction of carpet should be cut-off to fit in the room.
