Actually the correct line should be that Ebright was quite competitive but not in any bad sense. The story named as "The making of a scientist" is actually a text read by class 10 students in the 6th chapter of English literature.
Here it was shown that Ebright was a very intelligent student and his teacher i.e. Richard A Weiherer always used to praise him. According to Ebright, his teacher was the one who was responsible for letting him to open up his mind and think innovative, which helped him later to be a good scientist.
Richard also said that Ebright wanted to complete things for good and it was nothing for any bad sense. These qualities were needed to be a scientist.
