The chemist was so intelligent, that he prepared a clue to catch the culprit.
The Paper beside him read
" Carbon "
" Oxygen "
" Nickel "
" Lanthanum "
" Sulphur " .
If we find the symbols of the elements , (Ni + C + O + La + S) , We get Nicolas.
Hence, Among the three visitors ( Mary, Nicholas, Jonathan) His Nephew Nicolas was the criminal.
By this, They known the criminal.

Nice riddle!
Answer of the riddle-:
The famous chemist was very clever, I should say. To leave an evidence, (according to the picture attached with the Question) he wrote some chemical substances names on a piece of paper, the names were-
Carbon
Oxygen
Nickel
Lanthanum
Sulphur
On the day he was murdered, he only got 3 visitors , they were -
His wife (Mary)
His nephew (Nicolas)
His friend (Johnathan)
Police must have seen that piece of paper and would have Understood what's the logic behind writing those names, according to the chemical names written, the murderer is Nicolas, why?
'Carbon = C
'Oxygen= O
'Nickel= Ni
'La= La
'S= S
Arranging these symbols of chemical names, we get-
Ni+C+O+La+S= Nicolas
Murderer=> Nicolas (Nephew).
