The idea of a Ritual Order is proposed. It mediates between the social structure of the Social Order and the ideational structure of the Cultural Order. It is composed of three types of ritual practices; micro rites of linguistic behavior; meso rites of interpersonal interaction rituals; and macro rites of large scale public ceremony. Each layer of ritual mediates problematical connecting points in the social system, and partakes in the symbolic reproduction of social power. Micro rites symbolically link self to biological personhood; meso interaction rites link selves to institutional roles and class positions; and macro ceremonies reaffirm the identity of the collectivity as a corporate totality. The interrelationship of these modes of ritual practice in the overall process of symbolic reproduction is also discussed.
