Growing population and rapid industrial development have produced vast quantities of waste that have toxic compounds, and thus can not be naturally degraded. The water poisoned by these pollution.

Explanation:

Rivers were also used to recycle waste. The amount of garbage disposed of wasn't massive in older days.

Natural processes were enough to reduce all the discarded waste to harmless content and to control the amount of pollution.

But presently, growing population and rapid industrial development have produced vast quantities of waste that have toxic compounds, and thus can not be naturally degraded. And the water is created and poisoned by these pollution.
