Two identical balls of mass 2 kg each are kept in contact with a compressed spring, on either side of it. When the spring is released, the ball moves with a velocity of 10 ms-1. Find the acceleration produced by each ball, if the spring constant is 4 N m-1.

Force=mass*acceleration

4N=2kg*a

A=4/2=2m/s

hannjr: Work = KE (1ball) = 1/2 mv^2 = 1/2 * 2 * 10^2 = 100 J
hannjr: W = 1/2 k x^2 so x = (200 / 4)^1/2 = 5 m (or 1/2 of the spring was compressed 5 m. Then for uniform acceleration 2 a x = v^2 and a = 100 / (2 * 5) = 10 m/s^2 Or total KE (for 2 balls) = 200 J then 200 = 1/2 * 4 * x^2 and x = 10 and the total compression for each ball was 5 m agreeing with the result found above.
