• Jose Rizal, also known as José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda, was a Filipino author and physician who was born in the Spanish colony of the Philippines (half Filipino, half Spanish). As a result of his efforts to expose the horrors committed by the Spanish colonisers in the Philippines and his encouragement of a whole generation to pursue liberation, Rizal became known as the nation's national hero.
• Rizal's only guiding principle was to combat social injustice. He wished to set his fellow Filipinos free day and night. Rizal rose to prominence as the head of Propaganda, a reformist movement that relentlessly fought for civil liberties. He published numerous articles for La Solidaridad and even two novels to expose the crimes committed by the Spanish colonists. These resulted in his murder, yet he passed away a hero.
