RNA used to act as a genetic material bas well as a catalyst. There are some important biochemical reactions in the living system that are catalysed by RNA catalyst and not by proton. But RNA being a catalyst was reactive and hence unstable. Therefore RNA has evolved from RNA with chemical modification that makes it more stable.
