With the return of the rainy season for this year, the poor drainage system and the conditions of the road seem to be causing more terror than happy to welcome the rains. Over the years, there have been so many complaints from so many areas around the country regarding the failure of the municipal authorities to help the citizens in cleaning up the roads and in helping them have a proper drainage system.
However, looks like all the requests have gone into the drainage along with the rain water. It has just been a few days since the rains have started to pour down and the complaints are already on the rise from different parts of cities.
The major complaints were regarding the conditions of the roads which have many pitfalls that have not been repaired from the past 3 years in spite of repeated complaints to the municipal authorities. This has been a reason for the occurrence of many accidents to drivers who are new to the place and unwary of the pitfalls.
Another major issue was the insanitary conditions of the roads. Due to lack of a proper drainage system, there has been water stagnation, which has become the breeding place for many insects and mosquitoes. There have been many cases of malaria and dengue in the reported places. Also, there have been piles of garbage that have not been picked up and cleaned by the municipal people, which have become another menace of its own.
There have been many requests from the people to the municipal authorities asking them to help them to clear the above issues and help them live a normal and healthy life every day.
Road accidents occur due to poor drainage system
Poor conditions of roads is one of the major causes of road accidents in India. According to data issued on road accidents by Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the total number of road accidents increased by 2.5 per cent from 4,89,400 in 2014 to 5,01,423 in 2015. The total number of persons killed in road accidents increased by 4.6 per cent from 1,39,671 in 2014 to 1,46,133 in 2015.
This problem of poor roads is quite widespread in the nation. Especially during and after the monsoons the roads are badly damaged. In the cities, the drains get damaged. The coverings of the manholes are dislodged. Quite frequently these broken drains and uncovered manholes become the causes of the accidents.
These accidents can be stopped by making quality roads and timely repair of the broken roads, poor drainage system and insanitary conditions of roads. The departments responsible for the maintenance of roads should act proactively and ensure road safety.
