A pipeline supplying drinking water to Bethaniapuram was badly damaged on Sunday, leading to huge loss of water and inconvenience to the residents.
D. John Michael, a resident, said the pipeline burst around 2 a.m. on Anna Main Street. Residents who saw the gushing water alerted corporation officials around 4:30 a.m. “I called the engineer in-charge of Ward 21 at the crack of dawn, requesting him to fix the broken pipeline at the earliest. By this time, we had already lost lot of water,” he said. Help did not arrive till 10.30 a.m., he said. After Guru Theatre signal area got inundated, there was traffic problem from 7:30 a.m itself. A traffic police officer said the road normality was restored only after 11 a.m.
A corporation official said the pipeline was laid at least 25 years ago. The old pipe could not handle the pressure. “Bethaniapuram used to face severe water shortage in summer. We do not lay all the blame on corporation. But they should have acted swiftly. They could have shut off the supply i on hearing about the leakage,” Mr. Michael said.
