Robert’s father is 4 times as old as Robert. After 5 years, father will be three times as old as Robert. Find their present ages. substitution method​

Let the age of the son = X

Therefore, father's age =4X as given

But the sum of the ages of the son and father =50

:

X +4X = 50 we call this equation 1

solving for X in equation 1

X+4X = 50

5X= 50, Divide both sides by 5

5X÷5= 50÷5

X=10

The son's age X = 10

The father's age is 4X= 4x10= 40

10+40=50
