Turmeric turns red in the presence of a base.

The vegetables spots left yellow marks on Rohan's shirt because the food contained turmeric. When Rohan applied soap to the spots, the turmeric reacted with soap (which is a base) and turned red.

This property of turmeric is used to identify bases. It is called the turmeric test. It remains yellow when it comes in contact with acids and neutral substances, but changes to red on reacting with bases.

(Science is all around us and we can use simple everyday things, including a common spice like turmeric to conduct experiments.)
