Answer:

Boxing as a sport isn’t biased. Whether played by men or women, the rules, the requirements are the same. It is a game of strength, grit, stamina, focus and facing your fear. Once in the ring, the motive of the two players is to throw punches, hurt each other and continue playing until one is knocked down. Even though an equal playing field for both genders, boxing was perceived as a male-dominated game for long.

But, things changed and at the 2012 London Olympics, Women’s boxing made its debut with participation from countries across the world. The contender from India was Mary Kom, the flag bearer of the game as she marked her niche by becoming the only Indian woman boxer to have qualified for the 2012 Summer Olympics, competing in the flyweight (51 kg) category. She won the bronze medal at the games. But, at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games in 2014, in Incheon, South Korea, she got Indian women boxing high on the global map by becoming the first Indian Women Boxer to win a Gold Medal.

Athletes’ like Kom have a huge role to play in making games like boxing popular in India. Being a five-time World Amateur Boxing champion, and the only woman boxer to have won a medal in each one of the six world championships, she is also the only boxer to become Asian Amateur Boxing Champion for a record six times. Kom’s boxing achievements have got the game the much-needed exposure, sponsorship, media coverage, and most importantly, inspiring more girls to take up the sport. Her determination, hard work, and perseverance are what the newbies of the game should learn from. So, if you are ready to write a modern India’s sports script, don’t get blinded by the glamour but keep the fire going with humility, self-discipline, and passion.

She was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second highest civilian award, in 2020.
