The heart works as a pump and helps to move blood through the body.

It receives oxygenated blood from the lungs, which is pumped to different parts of the body where it is needed. It also receives de-oxygenated blood from different parts of the body, which is then pumped to the lungs for oxygenation.

With the exception of Pulmonary arteries and veins, all other arteries carry oxygenated blood and all other veins carry de-oxygenated blood.
