Well I don’t think Hindi Played any unifying role in freedom struggle except in north India where any way it was the mother tongue of the people and thus it was put against the English language of foreigners.
Rather I would say English played a unifying role in freedom struggle. It became a common language in which leaders from different parts of the country could converse, learn about each others problems, organize, agitate. Punjabi leaders like Lajpat Rai didn’t understand Bengali while Bengali leaders like Surendra Nath Banerjia didn’t understand Marathi which Bal Gangadhar Tilak knew. Similarly Gandhi didn’t know Tamil But conversed well with Rajaji in English. So you see English unified Indians no matter how surprising it seems.
Though It was the dream of many prominent leaders to develop Hindi as a link language across India but the way it was put after Independence resulted in Anti Hindi Agitations in southern states. Even the inspiration of having a link language came from English which was and is THE Link language in India
