Liberalism

Starting with a quote from Wiki “ Liberalism is a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality.

Whereas classical liberalism emphasises the role of liberty, social liberalism stresses the importance of equality.

Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but generally they support ideas and programmes such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, free markets, civil rights, democratic societies, secular governments, gender equality, and international cooperation.” Wiki

There are various perspectives, as views by political philosophers ; individualistic, pluralist, social democratic etc each with its own http://variations. To abridge,

to a liberal the individual is the focus, and all groups, associations and institutions exist for and around the individual.

“”Individuals rights, are inalienable, his liberties sacred”

The state is a means to an end , a necessary evil, and possesses only those powers granted by him/her. ( Locke, Rousseau and many others believe in the social contract theory)

Advocates free trade, demolishion of tariff walls, competition and a lazzies faire economy.

Experience between wwI and WwII, and post war, saw the problems brought on by unfettered liberalism, and authoritarianism. A rethinking on social parameters lead to communitarian ambience, further modified by induction of the state as a facilitator for enabling equitable distribution of national wealth, and equality of opportunities for all classes.

Neo liberalism as percieved post eighties has meant move to the far right with extension of market to every aspect of the society, lazzies faire in trade, creation of a strong government and suppression of certain ideologies. In USA Neo liberalism took the form of Neo conservatism, and was most active during the presidency of George w Bush.

The implementation of neo liberal methodologies introduced by the 'Chicago Boys,’ in Latin America have lead to a schism in societies.

SOCIALISM

Today many consider it a halfway home between Liberalism and Communism. It originated in the latter half of 1700s, an aftermath of the revolutionary movements in Europe and America when the society was looking for a panacea to over come economic problems arising out of Capitalism and authoritarianism.

It compasses various philosophies including evolutionary socialism, Fabianism, Guild Socialism, democratic socialism etc. Karl Marx and Engels percieved SOCIALISM as the successor to a capitalist society, and Russia became the first Union of Socialist republics. The revolutionary aspect was anathema to many socialists of the liberal variety. So today socialism implies faith in democratic principles. In socialism :

Equitable distribution of income and better living conditions for the working class.

A planned economy, control over the resources of the state which will be put to best use on behalf of the society in general and working class in particular.

Abandonment of revolutionary methods to obtain power.

Respect for individual aspirations, freedom and open avenues for progress.

State functioning for its citizens, based on social and economic ideals.

State is responsible for protecting the rights of its citizens, and promotion of a conducive atmosphere for the individual to develop the talents to the maximum capacity and grow to the fullest extent.

Owen, Saint Simon, Fourier, JS Mills etc are. Some of the earliest proponents of Socialism. Harold Laski is another great proponent of Socialism.
