Male sterility is a mechanism of preventing self pollination and its role in plant breeding is to ensure cross pollination and this in turn helps to produce plants which are of high yield and ensure that the plants are resistant to diseases.

Male sterility is where the pollen grain of the same plant is unable to fertilize the ovule of the same plant. Ad when this happens we say that the ovule is sterile but in real sense it is very effective only that it cannot fertilize the ovule of the same plant and that is what I mean by self pollination.
