It takes place in 3 steps-
a)Catabolism- Microbes takes sewage as a food, degradation of which releases ample amount of energy.
b)Anabolism-Microbes uses this energy to produce more bacterial cells (Biomass). Hence increasing the efficiency of biological treatment.
c)Endogenous Respiration- When no more sewage is left microbes starts decaying resulting in endogenous respiration and hence sludge production.
