Pulses are leguminous plants. Roots of leguminous plants have bacteria such as rhizobium which helps in nitrogen fixation which is then used by the plants.

When a legume plant dies in the field, all of its remaining nitrogen, which is incorporated into amino acids inside its remaining plant parts, is released back into the soil. In the soil, the amino acids are converted to nitrate(NO3-), making the nitrogen available to other plants, thus serving as a fertilizer for future crops.
