Role of religion and religious classes in the Vijayanagara empire:
- The Vijayanagara Empire existed as a South Indian kingdom founded in the Decca. The religion of Vijayanagara was characterized by profound 'religious activity in southern India'.
- Various sub-sects and sects emerged, temples assumed great significance and ‘mathas’ nurtured the spread of learning and religion. Though the kingdom had been founded to protect Hindu dharma from the attacks of the 'Mughal Empire' as well as the Deccan sultanates, the Vijayanagara rulers practiced forbearance towards all sects and religions.
- The Bhakti movement that had been active at that time, and involved well-known devotee saints, and like the 'Virashaiva movement of the 12th century', the Bhakti movement introduced another strong current of devotion, encompassing the lives of millions.
