The role of indian women during the freedom struggle especially during the Gandhian Phase forms an important and interesting aspect of freedom struggle. Merely on Gandhi's call a large number of women joined the freedom struggle. When gandhi gave the call for first mass movement in the form of Non Cooperation Movement many women participated with enthuse and so even led the movement like Sarla Devi, Muthulaxmi Reddy, Susheela Nair, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur, Sucheta Kripalani and Aruna Asaf Ali .Kasturba Gandhi, the wife of Mahatma Gandhi, and the women of the Nehru family, Kamla Nehru, Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit and Swarup Rani, also participated in the National Movement. They were active in participating in the Swadeshi movement, or the boycott of foreign goods, non-payment of taxes, picketing of liquor shops, and so on. During the Civil disobedience movement of 1930 Women too, played an active role in the struggle. Sarojini Naidu, Aruna Asaf Ali and Bhikaji Cama, to name but a few, inspired millions of others to take the first step on the road to emancipation and equality.

Women accepted critical responsibilities in India's struggle for freedom. They held public meetings, organized picketing of shops selling foreign alcohol and articles, sold Khadi and actively participated in National Movements. They even bravely faced the baton of the police and went behind the iron bars.
