Because more than the object that triggers our fear, it is, in all honesty, the manifestation of fear and the dread — that cripple our sanity and haunt us. It's the dread of facing our fears that makes us more miserable than the encounter itself.
Say for example, I'm afraid of socialising. In my case, what haunts me more than the conversations that transpire is the fact that I can't avoid them even when I desperately want to. THAT is what makes me miserable; the thought, the disgust of encountering something that sends me spiralling down.
All we can and we should do is, face our fears; slay them demons and even when we lose, we can pride ourselves on trying.
