Solution :-

Let us assume that, CP or the item is Rs.100x .

Case 1) :-

→ CP = Rs.100x

→ Profit = 28%

→ SP = CP * (100 + Profit)/100 = (100x * 128)/100 = Rs.128x

now,

→ SP = Rs.128x

→ Discount = 20%

→ MP = (SP * 100) / (100 - Discount) = (128x * 100) / 80 = Rs.160x

Case 2) :-

→ MP = Rs.160x

→ Discount = Rs.50

→ SP = Rs.(160x - 50)

now,

→ SP = Rs.(160x - 50)

→ Profit = 20%

→ CP = SP * 100 / (100 + Profit) = Rs. {(160x - 50)100 / 120}

therefore,

→ 5(160x - 50) / 6 = 100x

→ 800x - 250 = 600x

→ 800x - 600x = 250

→ 200x = 250

→ x = (250/200)

→ x = (5/4)

hence,

→ CP = 100x

→ CP = 100 * (5/4)

→ CP = Rs.125 (Ans.5)

The cost price of the item is Rs.125 .
